Tax Deductions & Charitable Donations
The truck for Vietnam Vets of America just picked up a row of bags off our driveway and my closets feel leaner. We stopped having garage sales years ago when our accountant pointed out that if we didn't have the money to give charities we could still claim deductions for the clothes, toys & household goods we donate. Even though we write checks now I still go through the closets & house looking for items that are still useful to someone else. I take a picture of the bags/boxes, attach it to the receipt left by the charity & file in our tax folder.

Smart Coco! I usually end up having a charitable donation because I've donated money at work or I signed up for a road race that benefits something. However, this is a great idea! Going through your closets and house to find things to give to charity - it's brilliant! Not only do you get a tax write off, you are organizing your life.
1Thanks jchrans. The best part is that the charities mail us a postcard about three times a year to remind us they will have trucks in our neighborhood. My daughter loves to clean out her closet too.
2This is really nice of you. there are so many things that ppl throw away that others could really use.
3I didn't know this. I've already filed for this year, but I will remember for next year. Thanks and good or your family giving to others.
4Do donated clothes and other items really add up to big tax deductions?
